Energy providers are all much the same in terms of what they offer you: energy! However, prices and levels of customer support vary significantly and we rate the different options by these metrics, and also by the amount that they invest in renewable energy sources. UK households have experienced four years of misery as prices skyrocket - the average household energy bill had reached over £1,000 by 2006. We look to price-capped tariffs as a way of protecting yourself against further rises and this has become a major part of our analyses. Recent studies have shown that many households could save up to £200 per year simply by switching to a more competitive tariff. British Gas has shaken up the market recently by introducing the first price drop in recent memory. Analyses show that the average household could save up to £214 simply by switching to the new "Click Energy 2" tariff. And in addition, by subscribing to the new British Gas "Price Guarantee 2008" product, you can fix your gas & electricity prices at these new levels until May 2008. This provides a welcome relief to UK household financial security, which has almost certainly felt the strain over the past year. Other companies currently offering price caps (in addition to British Gas) include ScottishPower and Powergen. All guarantee not to increase prices until beyond 2008. With uncertain industry expectations of price increases over the coming years, we see these tariffs as a sensible option to choose. npower currently rates top of our list in terms of its investment into renewable energy with the renewable-energy 'npower Juice' product. ScottishPower, currently the UK's largest wind farm developer, also impresses us with its commitment to renewable energy and recently announced plans to increase their investment in this area. However, energy pricing is very specific to your particular trends of energy usage and we do recommend getting a quote from each provider before committing yourself to a particular deal. We expect that after the introduction of the new British Gas "Click Energy 2" tariff, by switching your gas & electricity, you may be in for a pleasant surprise at last! Quick quote links:
